PhD and MPhil Studies at HKU Faculty of Science

The Hong Kong University is now inviting applications for admission to PhD and MPhil programmes for 2020-21.

The Faculty of Science boasts a long history of excellence in basic research and a team of outstanding scholars from around the world with a wide range of research expertise. We are inviting high caliber students for PhD and MPhil studies in 2020/21. The deadline for Main Round applications is December 2, 2019 (Hong Kong Time 12:00 noon). We encourage students with outstanding academic performance to apply for our programmes.

Available Funded Scholarships

1. The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPF)

The HKPF is a prestigious award established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong. Awardees will be provided an annual stipend of HK$309,600 (~US$39,700) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$12,900 (~US$1,650) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years.

2. Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS)

PGS will be awarded to full-time MPhil and PhD students (those not awarded under the HKPF scheme) who hold a first degree with second-class honours first division or above are normally considered eligible to receive a Postgraduate Scholarship during the normative study period. The basic level of scholarship is HK$17,330 (~US$2,200) per month.

3. University Postgraduate Fellowships (UPF)

UPF is at a total value of HK$70,000 (~US$8,900) on top of the Postgraduate Scholarships for full-time PhD candidates with an excellent academic record.

Please note that MPhil students should enroll on either September 1, 2020 or January 1, 2021 while PhD students can enroll on the first day of any calendar month.  As for the awardees of Hong Kong PhD Fellowships, students are expected to start their study on September 1, 2020.
